(Blog) Steven David Elliott joins me from Florida, Coast to Coast via Skype to talk about Networking in and out of the Pandemic. This is 2 TV show segments together.
Networking in Covid-19 with Steven David Elliot - DavidKamatoy.com Show 2020.10 from David Kamatoy on Vimeo.
Here are a few personal takeaways from this interview...
(Press Release) Multi-creative entrepreneur and television host and producer David Kamatoy has released his latest video from The DavidKamatoy.com Show on networking in the era of Covid 19 with author and entrepreneur Steven David Elliot. In the segment, “Networking in Covid-19 with Steven David Elliot,” the two discuss the creation of Elliot’s networking program, Rockstar Connect, and the challenges of networking in the coronavirus era.
After beginning a career in social work with the elderly, Steven David Elliot became interested in marketing after learning sales technique from a cousin. Remembering what his elderly clients had often said to him while in social work about regrets for things they had not done, Elliot decided to follow a dream and open up a bookstore. Eventually he had four successful bookstores, two each in North Carolina and Miami
, Florida, which he ran for 15 years. Even in an era of growing online book sales, Elliot’s stores thrived because of his emphasis on networking.
“It’s not about what you sell; it’s about the people,” Elliot explains in the interview. “I would help people, and they would reward me by doing business with me.” This focus on networking continued to grow and developed into a consistent networking event that provided the help he needed in his business. “I’m not a small business when I have a networking event, because I have that big tribe, a nation of people who are around me.”
Elliot goes on in the interview to explain how this networking event then grew into what today is the Rockstar Connect series of networking events. His theory, which he has shown to be quite successful, is that if people did a consistent networking event every month, they would never have to do any other form of prospecting. This is the power behind Rockstar Connect events which focus around an event host who is featured through social media pushes. By building an event designed to provide attendees with what they need to be successful, the host earns their gratitude and their connections. Many times a person who was never at the event is inspired by an attendee to connect and do business with the host.
The interview concludes with a discussion on the continued importance of connections and networking during the current Covid-19 era and beyond. Kamatoy points out the challenges of the new generation placing an inordinate emphasis on social media connections in contrast to tried-and-true methods such as phone calls. “That’s something we need to reinforce again, that it’s so strongly about relationships first.”

Please excuse my dust as we begin to update the site.
My plan is to take DavidKamatoy.com and then connect the dots between all sites. I will continue to blog on this site because of my early developed internet real estate and I will continue to blog again.
We came up on Typepad before Wordpress became the powerhouse that it is. As amazing as the Wordpress format is we have multiple sites brute force attacked and hacked. I personally have spent hours recovering Wordpress sites.
Additionally we have sites built on our own Jugglemail format which is ideal for membership based sites, Dojos, Dance Studios, etc.
Both Typepad and Jugglemail have been safer, less hack-able formats.
I look forward to writing again.
Please excuse the dust.
It was great to take a good look at Tweet.Grader, PeerIndex & Klout. Each have their benefits and bragging rights and theres no reason not to sign up for all of them. I have learned a lot about my own tweets patterns through all of them.
Enjoy!
For Immediate Release
"Blog This with David Kamatoy" covers the convergence of entrepreneurship, entertainment, and e-marketing.This episode covers Klout, Peer Index and Tweet.Grader, sites that help you measure your social influence on twitter. The latest installment additionally covers a birthday, 2 weddings and the reopening of the Village Theater in Coronado, CA. "Blog This with David Kamatoy" is a video blog extension of DavidKamatoy.com.
The show opens with David musing on the re-launching of "Blog This" on his birthday and a creepy rollover greeting from Google. He then moves on in Entertainment to discuss the wide-ranging coverage of the wedding of Doug Hutchison and Courtney Alexis Stoddard -- including a surprising post on a soccer site. The section ends with congratulations to Kamatoy Media Group team member Leo James on his marriage to Jessica Smith.
"Blog This" continues with the major focus of this show, a discussion of "Social Capital" and the amount of influence individuals and companies can have through sites such as Twitter and Facebook. In this section of the show, David Kamatoy looks at three websites that analyze social influence online: Klout, Twitter Grader, and Peer Index. "Sites like Klout, Peer Index, and Twitter Grader all rate or somehow come up with an algorithm to tell us how influential we are on social media, specifically Twitter," he explains. David Kamatoy goes on to review the advantages and disadvantages of each of the three rating sites, then details his strategies for improving social capital through Twitter. "I think of Twitter like a radio station that has the ability to turn into a conversation," he says. "You have to be willing to find some key people to have a good conversation with online that you know is public." They key, according to Kamatoy, is becoming a "rock star" in your database in order to have productive conversations and create "top-of-mind awareness" among the individuals in that database.
The newest episode of "Blog This" concludes with the video coverage of the reopening of the Village Theater in Coronado. This project is a joint effort with Creative Worldwide Media, Kamatoy Media Group and the Presidio Sentinel. The Village Theater closed down over a decade ago, and was recently restored by Vintage Cinemas, based in Los Angeles. The grand opening drew a huge crowd, including theater fans and the Mayor of Coronado, Casey Tanaka.

Blog This w/ David Kamatoy returns with a brand new virtual set, new music and solid content. If you're an entrepreneur, entertainer or e-markter. This is the show to watch. Please RT, Tweet, Digg, Like and of course BLOG THIS.
We've been wanting to restart the Blog This format for a while and finally it's here. We actually shot 2 episodes but this was the one we ended up going with. The virtual set took longer to build and that was half of the restart battle. Additionally I built the show this time as template format now that we have a format.
There are a few more elements that we want to add to the show but I am finally happy with the format. I wanted something that is on the edge of crossing over to broadcast television. Something that gives a nod to our radio and television background.
The goal of the show is to be in the conversation of the convergence of media with content, being funny but not totally cowtowing to the let me turn on the camera and be an idiot. While I appreciate the work of the Viral Video Internet Stars I am constantly asking myself, "Why exactly am I watching this?"
Ideally! We want to make you laugh, think and walk away with something useful that helps you get through the entertainment, entrepreneurial &/or E-marketing world.
To be a bridge between traditional and social media in a quirky kind of way. Ideally we use this format to spinoff other projects. One that were actuall shooting this Sunday.
It is definitely an extension of DavidKamatoy.com the blog. The idea that I can talk about whatever I feel is relevant. I believe the spin-offs will become much more niched.
Anyway enjoy the show! There is my bloggy type rant for the day.
San Diego, CA - Following a short hiatus, “Blog This with David Kamatoy” returns to the Internet covering the phenomenon of the iPad, the new film “I Melt with You,”Bristol Palin’s dating status, Mark Christopher Lawrence’s comedy stylings and review of an interview with SBA loan broker Craig G. Francis.
In his first story, David Kamatoy discusses the amazing popularity of the iPad, with more sold in the holiday quarter than many pundits had predicted for the entire year. David then moves on from the popularity of the iPad to a discussion of the lessons that can be learned from Apple’s successful marketing of this and other products. The question marketers need to learn from their prospects, as David Kamatoy explains, is “How do I feel about your product?”
David Kamatoy’s second major topic is the interview he conducted with SBA loan broker Craig G. Francis which reviewed 2010, covering several areas of interest to small business owners and looking ahead into 2011. “If you’re very serious about being a business person in 2011, you want to read the report,” says Kamatoy. Craig G. Francis presents some sobering facts about the current economic situation and what entrepreneurs need to consider as they move forward in 2011.
The final major topic of the episode is the Sundance Film Festival premier of a new movie, “I Melt with You,” starring Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven, and Christian McKay. David relates his involvement in the creation of a “Behind the Scenes” documentary of the movie, which was shot using Canon 5d and 7d cameras.
The episode also features a video starring Mark Christopher Lawrence of NBC’s “Chuck” spoofing the Activia Challenge commercials. This leads into a preview of several comedy shows Mark Christopher Lawrence will be producing in February, including at Cafe Muse in Los Angeles, Cygnet Theatre in San Diego and the new show at the Jack Dodge Theater.

We are days away from Thanksgiving which also means that we are heading into a time when the prospect of "New Business" goes into hibernation. If you are part of the holiday season then you will be exceptionally busy. For the rest of us there is a point when you will start to get the...
"Sounds Great! Let's talk at the beginning of the year."
A lot of you may hang up the phone and then scream...
So instead of being blindsided by this phenomena get clear that this is going to happen and it's up to you to responsible for your activity during this downtime.
For extroverts and those driven by sales and interactivity this may be a very difficult time especially if you emotionally attach yourself to sales/money.
AN EXTROVERT STRATEGY: Use the holiday time to emotionally connect with would be and current clients.
Use this time to get to know your database a bit. Ask important questions...
You can do this as a series of phone calls and/or emails preferably using a jugglemail.
Using a jugglemail strategy: Create a well written email and track that email using the "Hot Prospects" Generator. Then pick up the phone and connect with the Hot Prospects and the Read email recipients.
AN INTROVERT STRATEGY: Be meticulous about finishing up projects.
During this dead-time there are most likely some great talented people sitting idle right now for you to hire or ask for help to get some of the long-overdue projects completed.
We are currently organizing our end of the year strategies based on these principles.
We have a pile of content that has not been a priority but all extremely viable from conventions and events. We just shot 2 days of GREEEN SCREEN for ourselves and our clients that we have started post production on. While these may be completed during the end of the year we are really setting the table for the beginning of the year.
That being said please watch the blog as we build some great content over the next 6 weeks. If you want our assistance in creating some new media. email marketing, STUFF before the end of the year just contact us.
We will continue to update the blog with end of the year STRATEGIES....
Happy Holidays
Here are Ten Twitter Tips, social media and it's best and worst. Hopefully this will inspire a few ideas on how to build and monetize your database using twitter. This post will be discussed on the David Kamatoy Radio Show.
1.
Dell Computers $2 million and counting: Dell was the first company to come out with a press release that actually stated that they made a profit via twitter. http://twitter.com/DellOutlet started tweeting for the U.S. Dell Outlet in June 2007 based on a suggestion from someone attending the SXSW Interactive. They rewarded dell followers by promoting refurbished gear specifically and have noted sales to prove it.
THE LESSON: They created a specific type of reward and message that was different from their other marketing. In tandem with the reality that most twitter followers will be a bit tech savvy purchasing online this was a good match.
The result would have been different if they didn't do the discounted and refurbished sales.
2. Steve Agee, The Sarah Silverman Project: Steve Agee comedian started off his twitter following by pulling off a stunt on Ustream.tv about reading all first 5,000 names live on air when he hit 5,000. He is currently at 863,420.
Really good example of someone in the public spotlight using that publicity to gather a following in a new genre. Dane Cook did it on myspace and now Steve Agee is doing it on twitter.
ENTERTAINER TIP: Remember that when your on a hit show or in the limelight. Use it to build your database. Anyone in this side of the business knows that you never know when your going to get your show canceled. In radio they often sell the station out from under you with very little rumbling. If they told you the advertisers would go away.
OWN YOUR OWN DATABASE AND GET THEM TO AM EMAIL LIST
LIKE JUGGLEMAIL RIGHT AWAY.
3. Burger Lounge: http://twitter.com/burger_lounge Our friends at burger lounge did a great promotion that got some solid coverage. They gave away a burger to their twitter followers for an evening.Twitter fans, get a FREE burger in Little Italy today!
The Lesson: REWARD your followers at some point with a free gift, special discount or content.
Unsuccessful Social Media:3 Examples
4. Straight to Sales: Straight to SPAM! http://twitter.com/Wealth_Formula No Humanity This is perfect example of what does not work and will most likely be deleted as spam. Straight to a landing page with only one message. REALLY!!!
5. Good Porn Bad Porn: http://twitter.com/A_Dempsey While this may go straight to a porn link the good thing is the quotes and a varying message. Sneaky Porn Spam generally bad.
6. Don't Get Bitchy: It's a Public Forum... Personal Conversation Gone Wrong: http://valleywag.gawker.com/5152016/canuck-rag-regrets-tech-reporters-twitter-tirade Wow! read this exchange just awful. Thanks Joe Long.
The Lessons: 1. Use a landing page as seen below. 2. Quotes can be quite useful if used correctly. Choosing quotes that are related to your subject matter and then either blogging about them or just reference them back to you is a good idea in creating an ideal emotion. 3. It's public people remember that journalists are now quoting "tweets".
THREE TWITTER TIPS
7. Customize your twitter page. I use Google's picassa to create a collage using pictures and logos. You have to play with the output settings to get it right but it's a great free application.

8. Use Social Media Landing Pages ala Darren Rouse and facebook.

9. Content, Content, Content...
If you truly want to convert to sales or interactivity then you have to earn the respect of your followers through credibility. Therefore push content...
Blog postings- Like this one.
Press Releases-
Email Marketing: Jugglemail emails create unique URL's that can be easily posted onto twitter. We do it all the time with our press release emails.
Videos
Other peoples content: rt someone elses tweet usually garners attention and is often reciprocated.
10. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery: Pay attention to who you and others pay attention to and then customize that style to your own.
BONUS Final Advice: Remember that ultimately you don't own your twitter, facebook or myspace profiles. They can be deleted at anytime for complaints, overuse, spam. To top it all off the parameters are constantly changing.
TIP: Covert to a real email and contact information as quickly as possible for real contacts.
We do this using the auto responders on our jugglemail system or just dropping them into the system upon approval.

While 2 out of 3 Americans approve of the job that Obama is doing. Let's be clear that there is "doubt". However, I think that is a good thing.
Whether your an President Obama supporter or not. I think one thing was proved in the last election that your voice needs to be heard. In the last administration I admit feeling as though it was out of control and my opinion really did not count as much as it does during this administration.
There are several things wrong with our system that came to head in this recession and this is going to very difficult to fix. There needs to be a mentality shift to forgiving, moving on and getting to work.
Regarding Entrepreneurship...
In this recession we will see a redistribution of market share. We have developed this mentality in America to be #1. The problem is that it costs a TON OF MONEY to stay #1. We are seeing the fallout of this behavior right now.
I think that as entrepreneurs we have to share the marketplace and that business is not just built on product but relationship and preference as well.
I would rather have a business with 5,000 customers that general love me and I am contributing back, making a profit, creating wealth and good will. Rather than having 15,000 customers where customer service sucks, I have to charge more because of the advertising, liability, etc. That's just me though. The other point is that In and Out may not exist without McDonald's because they created the category.
"Lessons from a Juggler" Tip: Take a look at the category of business that your in. Look for the redistribution of market share and then figure out how to stand out above the rest and/or build relationships with your customers and clients through good will and referrals.
Use loyalty tools like email newsletters(jugglemail.com) social media, content, gifts, events, etc.)
