Here are Ten Twitter Tips, social media and it's best and worst. Hopefully this will inspire a few ideas on how to build and monetize your database using twitter. This post will be discussed on the David Kamatoy Radio Show.
Ten Twitter Tips, Successful and Unsuccessful
Examples with David Kamatoy and Morgan Westerman. Morgan Westerman
created one of the most successful viral videos of the internet and has
recently focused his energy on social media. In just a few short months
he has gathered about 25,000 followers on twitter. He is currently
working with entrepreneurs on best practices in sales conversion. He
can be followed @morganwesterman.
They rewarded dell followers by promoting refurbished gear specifically and have noted sales to prove it.
THE LESSON: They created a specific type of reward and message that was different from their other marketing. In tandem with the reality that most twitter followers will be a bit tech savvy purchasing online this was a good match.
The result would have been different if they didn't do the discounted and refurbished sales.
2. Steve Agee, The Sarah Silverman Project: Steve Agee comedian started off his twitter following by pulling off a stunt on Ustream.tv about reading all first 5,000 names live on air when he hit 5,000. He is currently at 863,420.
Really good example of someone in the public spotlight using that publicity to gather a following in a new genre. Dane Cook did it on myspace and now Steve Agee is doing it on twitter.
ENTERTAINER TIP: Remember that when your on a hit show or in the limelight. Use it to build your database. Anyone in this side of the business knows that you never know when your going to get your show canceled. In radio they often sell the station out from under you with very little rumbling. If they told you the advertisers would go away.
OWN YOUR OWN DATABASE AND GET THEM TO AM EMAIL LIST
4. Straight to Sales: Straight to SPAM! http://twitter.com/Wealth_Formula No Humanity This is perfect example of what does not work and will most likely be deleted as spam. Straight to a landing page with only one message. REALLY!!!
5. Good Porn Bad Porn: http://twitter.com/A_Dempsey While this may go straight to a porn link the good thing is the quotes and a varying message. Sneaky Porn Spam generally bad.
The Lessons: 1. Use a landing page as seen below. 2. Quotes can be quite useful if used correctly. Choosing quotes that are related to your subject matter and then either blogging about them or just reference them back to you is a good idea in creating an ideal emotion. 3. It's public people remember that journalists are now quoting "tweets".
THREE TWITTER TIPS
7. Customize your twitter page. I use Google's picassa to create a collage using pictures and logos. You have to play with the output settings to get it right but it's a great free application.
If you truly want to convert to sales or interactivity then you have to earn the respect of your followers through credibility. Therefore push content...
Blog postings- Like this one.
Press Releases-
Email Marketing: Jugglemail emails create unique URL's that can be easily posted onto twitter. We do it all the time with our press release emails.
Videos
Facebook
Other peoples content: rt someone elses tweet usually garners attention and is often reciprocated.
10. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery: Pay attention to who you and others pay attention to and then customize that style to your own.
BONUS Final Advice: Remember that ultimately you don't own your twitter, facebook or myspace profiles. They can be deleted at anytime for complaints, overuse, spam. To top it all off the parameters are constantly changing.
TIP: Covert to a real email and contact information as quickly as possible for real contacts.
We do this using the auto responders on our jugglemail system or just dropping them into the system upon approval.

San Diego,CA-Warren Lanier, Jr. Chief Visionary
Officer and CEO of Bridge Point Marketing joins David Kamatoy this
evening to talk about making your business ready for online marketing.
Live at 5-7p.m.
Tuesday 18th, 2009 on Ustream.tv or www.DavidKamatoy.com. Warren Lanier
is the founder of Bridge Point Marketing, a full service marketing firm
that specializes in bridging the gap between traditional advertising
philosophy and internet
marketing.
"I like to fashion my efforts after the insights of Peter F.
Drucker who said, 'because its purpose is to create a customer, the
business has two and only two functions: Marketing and Innovation.
Marketing and Innovation produce results. All the rest are costs.'"
This is why our slogan is simply..."We get our customers, customers."
says Warren Lanier
Warren will discuss the common misconceptions that businesses make
as they launch a campaign and often wonder why it didn't work. He will
talk about how to tell the difference between someone who knows what
they are talking about and
someone who is blowing smoke.
"I wanted to bring Warren onto the show to discuss some of the
generational issues that we are witnessing with the rise of social
media. Social media is getting the buzz right now but the reality is
that the same old school principles
apply it's just changed forms and is highly scaleable, ultimately
leveling the playing field even more." says David Kamatoy, host.
"If your interested in building your business online this is the
show to watch. We understand the challenge of the entrepreneur. Your
busy running your business, while marketing your business is really
another full time job. We want to be
able to bridge that gap with knowledge and service."
Warren was instrumental in his position at ipower, inc. one of the
largest website hosting service companies on the web; where he created,
implemented and managed online marketing campaigns (cpc, cpa, seo, sem,
email marketing, content
marketing, etc.) that assisted in taking the company from being a
virtual unknown to its present ranking of #5 world-wide in the shared
website hosting industry. After leaving that company he started Bridge
Point Marketing and is currently
working with and helping to develop other companies with effective
marketing and business development campaigns.
David Kamatoy and Warren Lanier Jr. share an entertainment
background as he worked in PR and Marketing working with individual
artists like Ray Charles, Barry White, Stevie Wonder and record labels
Motown, A&M and United Artists.

How has Twitter helped or hurt your blog?
Submitted by Guy Kawasaki, co-founder of Alltop.
Most of my traffic and people visiting my blog were not bloggers and would never subscribe to the site. I got most people to join the email list or met through networking.
Twitter for me was the missing piece. It has allowed content both new and old to have life and lend credibility to twittering. Where others need to develop content to go along with twitter. Twitter gave me an outlet for the content.
In addition several new posts were influenced by quotes or headlines that got traffic via twitter.
Social Media is the buzz right now. Many professionals in the media world are being inundated with requests about social media. In fact many businesses are contacting professionals saying, "I only want to talk about Social Media"
Social Media is really the long tail of PR, PR builds a brand and so does social media. Here are some key points that I intend to elaborate on in the show and in our work.
Concept #1: Advertising and Marketing is the first thought of Entrepreneurs and Business owners when they try to develop leads and business, but there are some inherent problems...
a. Ratio 1:1 3:1- Your goal in an advertising budget is to create a 3:1+ ratio. In other words for every dollar you spend you get 3 back. If you create a 1:1 ratio it might be working and needs some tweaking but most likely you are doing something right. 2:1-3:1 is getting much better. Your going to profit from this if your margins are correct.
The problem with advertising is the INITIAL INVESTMENT....
You have to spend money to find the right formula in advertising. Each and every medium and category has it's own price point as well. In other words $5,000 dollars may seem like a lot of money to you but that's one ad in a publication for a week, a day, a month. $b. 5,000 can be spent in Pay Per Click in a an hour if you wanted in the right category.
The good news is that your response is usually immediate good or bad.
You have to be willing to invest the money into the test phase in order to find that ratio.
That investment should be based ultimately on how much money you want to make a month a quarter, etc. In other words If you want to create $10,000 in sales a month then you should consider a $3333.33 a month budget. Adjust the ratio accordingly to testing, market and category.
b. Because advertising is our initial response to more sales. We try to equate that same model to PR and Social Media. That is not going to work because Social Media is about long ball and interacting with your database to find out what they actually like.
THROW THE SPAGHETTI ON THE WALL AND SEE IF IT STICKS.
Social Media allows you to build a database and experiment with that database as you grow. Time and Money spent in social media can move you into a smart advertising campaign.
Social Media like Search Engine Optimization can have long lasting effects that pay exponentially over time.
The great thing about social media is that it is scalable. You can do it yourself for relatively low cost meaning that your going to put more time than money into it. However if your time is better served in running your business than getting a firm like ours to manage social media is a smart move. www.KamatoyMediaGroup.com can be reached at 619-573-9456
(This is a working concept and it shall be continued...)
As I have been cruising twitter of late, I find this phenomena often. It is not unusual for people not to get twitter or blogging. I find that the concept is just hard for people to take. The learning curve is just so weird.
Think about it even if I wanted to say write a book, a screenplay a haiku poem there is a form and that form takes a while to master.
Twitter is coming into it's own and it's evolving as I am even typing this. While Twitter is he long tail of blogging the reality is that it's still confusing.
Let's face it as much as I enjoy blogging. It's first draft and I grew up on newspapers and books not blogs. To publish a first draft kind of goes against everything we were taught in school when you really think about it.
Here is my take on it.
1. Social Media is not going away.
2. It's the same content in a different form.
Theatre begat Film begat Television begat VHS begat DVD begat begat Internet video begat youtube begat hulu begat mp4 etc. etc. etc.
3.You have to meet people where they are at.
If your client, fans, database are you using twittter. You should be on twitter. If your clients fans database is on myspace, hey you should be on myspace.
4. Write content that your people and you care about.
5. Promote that content. Don't just write but learn to promote it.
I am seemingly spending more time promoting what I write than writing it. Eventually that will change once the database has built momentum it's then a matter of being...
6. Consistent:Be consistent with your output. Dedicate yourself to some sort of schedule because social media is about attrition, small ball, throwing stuff against a wall and seeing what works.
Final thoughts: You can't escape social media if you want to grow your business online. Therefore you need to get help and education on not abandoning your twitter or blogs. Go back and claim your web real estate and get some help.
We can help just email us. Yes this is a shameless plug to end this post. lol
San Diego,Ca- Stephanie Herrmann and the team at Rescue put together the "Tweetup" at the National Hardware Show. Essentially it was a networking session for the people that got to know each other online using Twitter at the National Hardware Show tagged as "#NHS09" on Twitter. While attendance was small real relationships were created.
It was a unique experience to get to know people virtually from twitter messages and blogs. Rapport seemed to happen quickly and there was a genuine desire to see if we could support each other.
"It's like online dating for entrepreneurs."
One of the more confusing things about social networking is the ability to understand how it converts to a more traditional relationship. We see a lot of people treating Twitter like a FREE ADVERTISING space which while valid needs to me tempered with personal updates, tips, insights otherwise you will be treated like SPAM.
Getting your twitter connected to a blog or at least a landing page or contact page with an email is one of the best ways to help convert to a traditional relationship. In addition if you don't want your larger conversations searched by Google, it's best to do this.
At the point that it seems like an actual conversation further than 140 characters is needed. Request and send contact informtion or a landing page with that contact information listed. Remember to create your email address as a link not as searchable text on a page. That's the quickest way to be spammed.
Tip 1: Balance your messages from pitches, tips and personal updates. Tip 2: Use Tweetdeck to turn Twitter into a more useable application. Tip 3: Use a landing page or an about page with contact information to exchange contact info.
"When it seems right ask to have a real conversation or meeting that warrants more than a 140 character interaction."

Tweetdeck takes twitter to another level, but there is still a learning curve. Downloading the application is the first step.
One of the problems that people have with twitter and social media in general is the transition of friends to an actual network of people that you have relationships with.
On a more bottom line note...
HOW DOES SOCIAL MEDIA TRANSLATE TO SALES?
Why I can't answer that directly for everyone. We consistently talk about balancing your messages from being content, sales, fun and personal related.
A better question...
HOW DO I GET PEOPLE TO START INTERACTING WITH ME?
I discovered this originally from a short post I did on having the filing cabinet fall on me in the old office. This is when I first realized people are reading.
So while there are a ton of things to play with on Tweetdeck here are a few tips on Keyword searches.
1. Download the Application.
2. Click on the Keyword Search icon and then choose some keywords related to your product, service or interest.
3. Tweetdeck will then create a column dedicated to that search.
4. You can then start to follow or interact with those people chatting about what your doing.
5. If they are not following you just use the @ button. and then keep an eye out for a response.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS IS THE FIRST STEP TO SALES.
You'll find that Twitter becomes a lot more like IM chat with Tweetdeck and you'll start to create more relationships. This is another step in creating relationships which should lead to sales.
I wouldn't stop the sales messages but try to find that balance as quickly as possible. Balance will give all your messages more credibility.

"Social Media" is the buzz right now. The reality is that you need to go where your customers and clients are. So if they are on twitter, myspace, facebook, email you should be there and if you are there before anyone else the better.
However "Social Media" is really it's own form of PR and PR builds a brand not advertising. Advertising and marketing are based on ROI. So when I spend a dollar I know that I'll get 2 or 3 back. So once you get to that decision, once you test something that works then it just makes financial sense.
PR via the web, email, blogging and social media act as a long term investment that can make your advertising and marketing more effective or replace it all together.
It also comes down to budget. Realistically if you want make 10,000 a month in income then you have to plan on spending a certain amount of time and energy getting that income. At a 3:1 ROI you would be looking to spend about 3333.33 dollars. This probably looks a lot like your 1-2 person entrepreneurial adventure.
The reason I bring this up is that I am getting a lot of interest in, "Social Media" interest but I think the reason "Social Media" is effective that it is part of a total integrated campaign.
