A friend brought her to me four years ago. A beautiful gift. She was born between 1970 and 1973 but I'm not sure. All she has as a way of identification (besides the Lightning Bolt and Infinity logo) is the number 3763 near her tail. She is a vintage Infinity shortboard, with a Lightning Bolt glassed in, logos from two competing 70s board shapers, and I have to part with her!
She's yellow on the top and red on the bottom with a beautiful pinstripe around her side that matches the mint green Lightning Bolt on her deck. Even her leash is vintage. She surfs like a bandit, too!
The thick foam gives you plenty of freedom to step up close to the nose and ride fast! See how the tail flares in? And how about those down rails? This is the height of 70s performance in one board!
She's about 5'9" tall and 17" wide at the Lightning Bolt. The tail's about an inch thick and 10 inches wide after the flair down. Great for quick turning!
The single fin is a custom job too I like to ride with it up pretty high as the turns drag out if it's too far back.
This board was featured in a photo shoot for Getty Images, the premier photo reference for professional designers, editors and publishers. The photos below (without the GETTY IMAGES watermark) have been or will be seen by thousands throughout the world. She's had her fame and you can ride her!
So why does an Infinity board have a Lightning Bolt?
Good question.
Infinity boards was founded in Orange County in 1970 by Steve Boehne, at the beginning of the shortboard revolution. The main player during this revolution was Gery Lopez and his Hawaii crew -- all shaping under a loosely formed group whose symbol was the lightning bolt. Could it be that Boehne, the California shaper did a number for Hawaiian Lightning Bolt? Or did Lopez shape the board for Infinity, insisting that his bolt be part of the package?
Good questions!
So far, Infinity surfboards hasn't answered my inquiry about board number 7363. Here is a link to the Infinity history page. I'll let you know all about the provenance of this board just as soon as I find out myself.
In the meantime, Mahalo and surf safe!
Kevin
