Theatre:
Saw a lot of it last week and, let me tell you, I'm trying REALLY HARD not to fee jealous or resentful. My playwriting co-op not only doesn't exist but it had performances in an empty art gallery. San Diego Playwrights Collective has a lot of energy and got to perform at the North Coast Rep. At UCSD, you get great sets, lights, costumes and talented actors in a nice little black box theatre -- no matter what your play is about. Naomi Izuka shepherds them and Shirley Fishman (La Jolla Playhouse Literary Manager) watches them.
At several theatres this season, I saw great actors working on fabulous sets, while weraing fabulous costumes and under expert lighting -- working on third rate material. I also recently saw an American classic at a name brand theatre and it was just so so. And ticket prices are through the roof! There needs to be a revolution and I want to be involved.
No more paying for great performances of not-so-great work, San Diego!
No more paying for so-so performances of great work, San Diego!
Support the creation of good work no matter how much was spent on the ancilaries, San Diego!
Give theatre management a $50 piece of your mind if you're not entertained. Write letters, blog (but don't mention names if you ever waht to be a produced playwright like me!), quit paying for crap! Wait for the reviews. Talk to friends. Only pay for the good stuff and let the expensive pieces of questionable work become a thing of the past. Pay for quality productions of good work only, San Diego and that's what you'll get.
